In memory of John Hughes...

The passing of John Hughes hits members of Twitchy Dolphin Flix, like so many others, with deep shock and sadness. From our earliest conception, Hughes has been at the top of a very short list of filmmakers who both inspired the creation of Twitchy Dolphin Flix and influence the way we approach our films.

He never created the epic dramas or visual masterpieces of better-known filmmakers. He never won a single major Hollywood award for his seemingly endless array of hits. Yet there is neither the space nor the need to list his incredible catalog of film; because even for a man who had been out of the business for nearly 20 years, title after title and quote after quote are beloved memories to millions, still as fresh in their minds today as when he first created them.

He instead gave the world wonderfully simple and relatable stories that made the ridiculous sublime and captured the angst of youth with rare honesty and humor. In doing so, his stories transcended themselves to become profound, iconic representations of their time — our time — and we just weren't ready to let go our childhood heroes quite yet.

For all these reasons and more, we can think of no greater tribute than to dedicate the San Antonio screening of FUNNY BOOKS in Hughes' honor. We hope you can join us at the Alamo Drafthouse: Westlakes on August 15 for a celebration of his life and a film we believe bears an indelible feeling of Hughes' brand of simple fun and great music.

Twitchy Dolphin's second feature film release FUNNY BOOKS is a comedy, lovingly told by comic fans for comic fans and non-fans alike, about an unassuming dreamer named Wally who finds himself, and true love, while juggling a nefarious boss, a manipulative girlfriend, and a universe of elitist fanboys and eccentric characters at the friendly neighborhood comic store. The film is appropriate for viewers 17 and up.
